A gun owned by Pennsylvania State Senator Bob Regola (R-39th) has been used to kill a fourteen year old boy, the Associated Press has reported today.
RAW STORY has since found that Regola, a first term Republican, is a member of the National Rifle Association as well as the Police Rod and Gun Club, and received the endorsement of Firearms Owners Against Crime.
According to the AP, the dead boy was taking care of the pets at Sen. Regola's home while the Senator was In Harrisburg, the state's capital, to receive an award. Harrisburg is located approximately 170 miles from Westmoreland County, location of Regola's residence.
It is unclear whether the teen's death was a homicide or suicide.
Pennsylvania law does not require handguns to be kept in a locked location. Police have said Regola will not face any charges in the incident.
Now, while I am reminded of that old Alanis Morrissette song that goes "isn't it ironic," in all honesty, if Regola didn't actually do anything to kill a kid, then I hope this doesn't start up the old "no guns" chant. Yes, I am pro-guns. I'm a country-raised girl who was taught to fire one when I hit puberty. Mostly because I was interested in guns, but also, it's always nice to know how to protect yourself when trouble comes, and you're miles away from quick help.
I do think Regola should have had his gun locked up in a cabinet. The law may state differently, but it's just logical thinking. I also think Regola owes the parents a huge apology, and he should cover all hospital and funeral expenses.
Really, a gun can't kill you unless you are messing around or you intend to shoot yourself with it. Guns aren't the problem here--people are.
