34.5% of Young Black Males Unemployed

Joblessness for 16-to-24-year-old black men has reached Great Depression proportions -- 34.5 percent in October, more than three times the rate for the general U.S. population. "Give me a chance to show that I can work. Just give me a chance," said Delonta Spriggs, 24, who is on probation for drug possession and sought job training to avoid going back to selling drugs. "I don't want to think negative. I know the economy is slow. You got to crawl before you walk.

1 Million Unemployed Might Lose Benefits Soon

Unemployment Rate Highest For Men

Four-fifths of the 2.74 million people who lost their jobs between November 2007 and November 2008 were men, according to Andrew Sum of the Center for Labor Market Studies. "It's been an overwhelmingly male phenomena," he said.

New unemployment claims hit 26-year high

New claims for jobless benefits rose more than expected last week, exceeding even gloomy expectations for an economy stuck in a recession that seems to be deepening.

The Labor Department reported Thursday that initial applications for jobless benefits in the week ending Dec. 6 rose to a seasonally adjusted 573,000 from an upwardly revised figure of 515,000 in the previous week. That was far more than the 525,000 claims Wall Street economists expected.
