Electoral College Votes for Obama



In Obama’s home state of Illinois more than half of the state’s 21 electors stood to speak Monday, mostly about the historic significance of his election. The vote was held for the first time in the state Senate chamber in Springfield to honor Obama’s time as an Illinois lawmaker.

“Everybody recognized the historical significance of today’s Electoral College meeting, that not only is the next president of the United States from Illinois, but that he is the first African-American president and from Illinois,” said Henry Haupt, a spokesman for the Illinois Board of Elections.

The process in Illinois went off without a hitch, lasting less than hour.
