Sen. Ted Stevens, the longest serving Republican in Senate history, narrowly lost his re-election bid Tuesday, marking the downfall of a Washington political power and Alaska icon who couldn't survive a conviction on federal corruption charges. His defeat to Anchorage Mayor Mark Begich moves Senate Democrats closer to a filibuster-proof 60-vote majority.
More on Stevens losing his re-election bid here....
This is breaking news on several levels.
1., Corrupted and felony convict Ted Stevens will not be a member of Congress anymore.
We don't have to deal with impeachment proceedings in the Senate that could get rather nasty and provide fodder for elections in 2 years.
2., Sarah Palin doesn't get a chance to take Stevens vacated seat if he would be ejected from Senate after a successful re-election campaign.
We don't have to deal with her daily Gaffes in the senate and on C-span.
She goes back to the Alaskan prairie where she belongs and her 15 minutes of fame are more of a bad memory/nightmare that is finally ending.
3., Democrats are a very small margin from having a obstruction free Congress.
Republicans would not be able to use procedural objections to delay or block legislation.
They would have to choose to play ball and help fix things or just sit on the sidelines and watch the game blow right past them.
This country needs change and several things allowed under the Bush regime need modified or changed like yesterday.
These swift and strong changes cannot happen with whiny Republicans playing games with struggling American's lives.
4., Stevens is made an example of and the message sent is loud and clear.
If you F#$k around with Senate/House/Congress rules and break the law, you will be caught and the long arm of the law will nail you.
Your career will be over in a blink of the eye and the world as you know it will come to an adrupt end.
