Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told Annan in a phone call Wednesday that the U.N. post was hit inadvertently.
"The prime minister expressed Israel's deep regret over the mistaken killing of four U.N. peacekeepers," Olmert said in a statement released by his office. "The prime minister said he has instructed the military to carry out a thorough investigation and that the results will be shared with the U.N. secretary general."
Olmert expressed dismay over Annan's initial comments that the airstrike was "apparently deliberate."
"It's inconceivable for the U.N. to define an error as an apparently deliberate action," Olmert said.
Annan had demanded an Israeli investigation of the attack.
Yeah...Olmert sounds really disappointed there. Right.
No agreement on Mideast cease-fire plan
Kofi Annan is right--the solution to the Middle East crisis should involve Iran and Syria. I know Condi doesn't like that (which is why there's been no resolution yet), but I think she and the boobs in DC tend to forget that Kofi doesn't wear a sign that says "Doormat--please step all over me" on his back. Yet.
Annan: Israel bombed UN base for hours
"I spoke to Mr Olmert and he definitely believes it was a mistake and has expressed his deep sorrow, " Mr Annan told a press conference in Rome.
"But the shelling started in the morning and went on until after 7pm. You cannot imagine the anguish of the unarmed men and women peacekeepers who were there."
That might be the reason Kofi's not buying that whole "deepest regrets" bullshit from Olmert.

Half of Americans Approve of Israel's Military Attacks in Lebanon
But they also think the force Israel is using is too excessive.
Lebanon talks call for urgent, lasting ceasefire
Lebanese Prime Minister Fouad Siniora, who in an impassioned speech that diplomats said moved participants had asked: "Is the value of human rights in Lebanon less than that of citizens elsewhere? Are we children of a lesser God?"
With no action taken by the conference that could bring immediate relief to suffering civilians, Siniora said there were dangers in delaying a ceasefire.
"The more we delay the ceasefire, the more we are going to witness more are being killed, more destruction and more aggression against the civilians in Lebanon, " Siniora said.
Many Americans stuck in southern Lebanon
Well, of course...and it's amazing how many of them are Lebanese-Americans. Sorry, everyone. Unless you're rich, you're going to be waiting there a while.
