LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Thursday said she has signed the first bill toward allowing Michigan school districts to open single-sex schools.
Three related bills are being finished up in the state Legislature.
Detroit and Grand Rapids are among the districts that have explored the idea of creating separate schools or classrooms for boys and girls. Supporters say the voluntary, single-gender schools would give parents more options for their children and that students could better focus in those learning environments.
