ACLU Sues for Anti-Gay Group That Pickets at Troops' Burials
ACLU Sues for Anti-Gay Group That Pickets at Troops' Burials
I have always been a strong supporter of free speech and its importance as a cornerstone of a free and democratic society.
As much as I hate to admit it, that's the very reason that groups like the fundamentalist Westboro Baptist Church "anti-gay" protestors must be allowed the same freedoms to express themselves like everyone else.
Besides, let's get to the core of what the nationwide ban of protests at military funerals is all about: a well thought attempt by the Pentagon to control the spin or negative press coming from soldiers dying on a regular basis.
You can't lie to people and tell them all is peachy keen over in Iraq while pictures of flag-draped coffins are being published in the Washington Post almost every other day.
It also served as a tool to dumb down military parents who may be at those funerals. As long as they don't see the protestors, they will continue to be the strongest public supporters for this fraudulent and failed war.
Basically, we have a Vietnam-like environment now in Iraq, and history will tout the entire field of operations as a total waste and nothing more than a personal agenda which involved Bush Jr. avenging the rumored death threats of his father. Several thousand soldiers and well over a 100,000 civilians died in vain over nothing more than a rumor. The only good thing to come out of this will be changes in the Republican-controlled Congress and possibly the White House.
Voters are very mad that the War in Iraq shows no end, and there is no measuring stick for success.
Serious issues like high gas prices and the Middle East conflict go ignored while the "do nothing Congress" focuses on public relations stunts like a gay marriage constitutional ban, a flag burning ban, and a ban on funding for embryonic stem cell research.
The way to control the negative press and truth about a GOP-led Congress and White House who are complete failures is to simply throw up brick walls. The Republicans prefer to treat government operations like a secret society, similar to the Skulls and Bones or the Free Masons where only a certain few know the real story of how bad things really are.
That's why the law banning protests at military funerals must be struck down and not allowed to return in any way, shape, or form. People--civilized Democratic people must know that there is a cost for war, and it's not rosy like they want to tell people on (ROX) Fox News. People must be reminded of the human cost of such conflicts, that there is real flesh and bones inside those coffins.
Only then will politicians that use war as a first option and a political party tool to advance an agenda (9/11 anyone?) be held accountable and be forced by the very voters that put them in power to use all available options on the table before rushing some small town's star-running back to the frontlines with an M-16 strapped to his chest and orders to kill everything living in sight.
I thank God every day that there are blogs and independent news outlets that continue to get the true story out to the people. These outlets have picked up the torch and run where traditional big media outlets have failed.
As long as groups like the Pentagon continue to want to lie and spin false truths, the bloggers while be in the background, doing their part to keep freedom free. The real patriots in all of this are those who spread the message with the power of each keystroke.
Freedom is not free, but daily soldiers and bloggers alike do their civil duty to keep the enemies of a free society at bay.
