Keeping America competitive requires affordable energy. And here we have a serious problem: America is addicted to oil, which is often imported from unstable parts of the world. The best way to break this addiction is through technology. Since 2001, we have spent nearly $10 billion to develop cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable alternative energy sources -- and we are on the threshold of incredible advances.
So tonight, I announce the Advanced Energy Initiative -- a 22-percent increase in clean-energy research -- at the Department of Energy, to push for breakthroughs in two vital areas. To change how we power our homes and offices, we will invest more in zero-emission coal-fired plants, revolutionary solar and wind technologies, and clean, safe nuclear energy.
Then the other day, Bush does his three-state trip to tout his energy policy.

A Wisconsin auto-parts supplier got to show off its new hybrid battery lab to President Bush on Monday as he touted his new energy proposal.
Bush spent 50 minutes at the Johnson Controls' laboratory in Glendale before speaking to about 200 people, mostly Johnson Controls employees, at the company's downtown offices.
Amazingly, it doesn't take long before someone leaks this:
President Bush, on a three-state trip to promote his energy policy, said Tuesday that a budgeting mix-up was the reason 32 workers at one of the nation's premier renewable energy labs were laid off and then reinstated just before his visit.
Boy, is Georgie's face red! Someone let the cat out of the bag!
Should we even be shocked that funding was cut to the very program he was supposed to be "fixing"?
Yeah, I guess not. After all, Bush's Medicare proposal speaks for itself.
