A memorable moment in our planet's history comes to pass Saturday, February the 25th, at 7:16 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
That is the exact time that guys with almost no social life and pocket protectors full of pens at the U.S. Census Bureau predict the Earth's population will meet and then exceed the 6.5 billion people mark.
A report issued by the Bureau in March 2004 noted that world population hit the 6-billion mark in June 1999. "This figure is over 3.5 times the size of the Earth's population at the beginning of the 20th century and roughly double its size in 1960," the study explained.
Even more striking is that the time required for the global population to grow from 5 billion to 6 billion--just a dozen years--was shorter than the interval between any of the previous billions.
On average, 4.4 people are born every second.
With this current news, wouldn't this now be a good time to put some serious thought into managing our precious natural resources? How about that often-ignored thing called "global warming?" A meeting of the minds and a concern for those who are going to be our "leaders of tomorrow" is all it takes.
Why save tomorrow what we can save today?
