Liberal bloggers are likened to right-wing pundit Ann Coulter and disgraced former Senator Joseph McCarthy (R-WI) in a commentary in today's Wall Street Journal by Lanny Davis, former special counsel to President Bill Clinton.
Davis' assessment of bloggers was made during time he spent volunteering for Joe Lieberman's primary campaign effort. Davis describes Lieberman as a "longtime friend."
Davis cited examples of posts made by sometimes anonymous bloggers at sites like Dailykos.com and Huffingtonpost.com. Examples of blog posts he cited are:
"'Ned Lamont and his supporters need to [g]et real busy. Ned needs to beat Lieberman to a pulp in the debate and define what it means to be an American who is NOT beholden to the Israeli Lobby' (by 'rim,' posted on Huffington Post, July 6, 2006).
"'Joe Lieberman is a racist and a religious bigot' (by 'greenskeeper,' posted on Daily Kos, Dec. 7, 2005)."
"Now, in the closing days of the Lieberman primary campaign, I have reluctantly concluded that I was wrong," Davis wrote about his belief that liberals were not "intolerant and hateful."
In closing his column, Davis likens the anonymous bloggers he cites earlier to McCarthy and Coulter. "Mr. Lamont and all other liberal Democrats should remember the McCarthy era and not fall into the trap of the hypocrisy of the double standard -- that it's not OK when Ann Coulter dispenses her venomous hatred, but it is OK when our side's versions of Ann Coulter do."
Well, perhaps some may find it shocking (especially those people who think by calling me "conservative" or "liberal," they are deeply insulting me) that I agree with this guy (somewhat). While I find it highly amusing that the people Davis cited were just your average crazy commenters you can find on any political site, too many bloggers on both sides of the fence are hypocritical.
