Barack Obama came up a big winner in the presidential race in Dixville Notch and Hart's Location, N.H., where tradition of having the first Election Day ballots tallied lives on.
Democrat Obama defeated Republican John McCain by a count of 15 to 6 in Dixville Notch, where a loud whoop accompanied the announcement in Tuesday's first minutes. The town of Hart's Location reported 17 votes for Obama, 10 for McCain and two for write-in Ron Paul. Independent Ralph Nader was on both towns' ballots but got no votes.
"I'm not going to say I wasn't surprised," said Obama supporter Tanner Nelson Tillotson, whose name was drawn from a bowl to make him Dixville Notch's first voter.
With 115 residents between them, Dixville Notch and Hart's Location get every eligible voter to the polls beginning at midnight on Election Day. Between them, the towns have been enjoying their first-vote status since 1948.
Things are off to an outstanding start for Barack Obama. This may be an early indicator of great things to come.
Mr. McCain played biggest gamble of his life by picking Gov. Palin. If it was his own life to be endangered by his decision that would be okay. He is playing Russian roulette with future of the US as well as whole world. He really put his presidential ambitions in front of country.
The last couple of week’s performance of Palin very clearly demonstrated that she is nothing but a pretty Beverly Hills Hillbilly. She has no substance, no culture, and no education. She is a perfect example of an Alaskan Homesteader. Her appearance on the national scene reminds me of a Homesteader's town visit once a month for a shower, laundry and groceries. This is not Vaudeville Theater. The presidency of the USA is a gravely serious business.
Last time (8 years ago) when we acted with our "folksy" desire to see a real down to earth, not very bright President, look what happened. If you really want to repeat same mistake because your resentment over Hillary episode, abortion, religious fervor or any other reason, go ahead and enjoy the ride. The whole world is watching and wondering are we going to screw it up again.
Most influential Republicans and conservatives are cautioning us about Palin and McCain. I am asking independent minded people of this country please; please don’t vote with your emotion. READ, LISTEN, COMPARE before you pull that lever. In this election, we all have a very serious responsibility. Let us do it right.
A very good letter to independents on the state of the union including where we've been, where we are now and hopefully where we will be in the immediate future politically.
A phony State Board of Elections flier advising Republicans to vote on Nov. 4 and Democrats on Nov. 5 is being circulated in several Hampton Roads localities, according to state elections officials.
In fact, Election Day, for voters of all political stripes, remains Nov. 4.
The somewhat official-looking flier - it features the state board logo and the state seal - is dated Oct. 24 and indicates that "an emergency session of the General Assembly has adopted the follwing (sic) emergency regulations to ease the load on local electorial (sic) precincts and ensure a fair electorial process."
Looks like a page from the Karl Rove playbook if you ask me. Republicans hard at work again. It must be horrific for them to believe over 75% of the eligible voters are coming out to vote this election cycle. They know they can't win on the issues alone so denying/corrupting the voting process is the only card they have to play. What's really sad is the dishonorable depths the GOP has fallen to.
It seems there's a spell of "doom and gloom" going around the GOP insider circles right now. Increased voter turnout does favor the Dems and Republicans are having a sissy fit over the fact people might come out in force to vote this year. Please do me a huge favor if you are reading this, make a Republican cry Nov. 4th, go vote. Thanks ahead of time...
Early voting begins in Florida, 15 days before the Nov. 4 election. Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama has been pushing the early vote, and is in the state for its start.
Paul Weyrich, "father" of the right-wing movement and co-founder of the Heritage Foundation, Moral Majority and various other groups tells his flock that he doesn't want people to vote. He complains that fellow Christians have "Goo-Goo Syndrome": Good Government. Classic clip from 1980. This guy still gives weekly strategy sessions to Republicans nowadays. The entire dialog from the clip:
"Now many of our Christians have what I call the goo-goo syndrome — good government. They want everybody to vote. I don't want everybody to vote. Elections are not won by a majority of people, they never have been from the beginning of our country and they are not now. As a matter of fact, our leverage in the elections quite candidly goes up as the voting populace goes down."
I see the GOP telling the truth here for once, and I'm amazed. Lower voter turnout favors the Republicans. Getting the sheeple to vote for you is like money in the bank.
Getting people who think for themselves to vote for you? Um, not so easy.
Then there is that whole Republican base "hatred and racism" thing, and one can easily see why they don't want Hispanic or African-American voters coming to the polls.
I honestly hope voter turnout is above 50% this year, and the Republicans freak out about the record number of people exerting their right to vote. Nothing we do can be more American then going to the polls on November 4th.
The secret and inconsistent manner in which purges are conducted make it difficult, if not impossible, to know exactly how many voters are stricken from voting lists erroneously. And when purges are made public, they often reveal serious problems. Here are a few examples from this year:
* In Mississippi earlier this year, a local election official discovered that another official had wrongly purged 10,000 voters from her home computer just a week before the presidential primary.
* In Muscogee, Georgia this year, a county official purged 700 people from the voter lists, supposedly because they were ineligible to vote due to criminal convictions. The list included people who had never even received a parking ticket.
* In Louisiana, including areas hit hard by hurricanes, officials purged approximately 21,000 voters, ostensibly for registering to vote in another state. The purge did not follow existing legal protections that require officials to notify affected voters and give them the opportunity to contest or correct the records. A voter can avoid removal if she provides proof that the registration was cancelled in the other state, documentation not available to voters who never actually registered anywhere else.
