When they performed John Williams' "Air and Simple Gifts" at the inauguration, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, violinist Itzhak Perlman, pianist Gabriella Montero and clarinetist Anthony McGill used previously recorded audio for the broadcast because of the cold. "It would have been a disaster if we had done it any other way," Perlman told The New York Times.
