New Michael Moore Film "Sicko" Takes On Broken American Health Care System

Sicko: I'm sure the health care industry big-wigs love this.

Michael Moore seeks to strike the ire of the health care industry's rich big cats and push a ton of much-needed attention onto a system that is very broken, often hurting those who need its help the most.

In more ways than one, this new Moore film hits home for me.

Without going into too much detail and violating the privacy of loved ones, I have grandparents who are now forced to make very hard choices in regards to what meds they take to sustain life. They are practically relying on samples and generic medicines (when available) to stay healthy and somewhat pain-free. My grandparents and many others have now hit the beloved "donut hole" in their Medicare coverage, and must now pay thousands out of pocket till the coverage starts up again.

Of course, who do they have to thank for all of this?

A Republican-led Congress and a faulty Medicare reform legislation that was written entirely by the big drug companies.

There you have it, folks.

In their golden years, my grandparents get to play a variant form of Russian Roulette with their health while the drug companies get richer by the minute.

Again, I wonder what exactly is golden about these so-called "golden years"?

The segments presented stories of personal health care nightmares, including that of a woman denied payment for an ambulance ride after a head-on collision because it was not preapproved.

"They try to find every way they can to deny it to you or not sell it to you," he told a packed theater. "Or they try to find anyway they can not to pay the bill."

The "Sicko" excerpts also included a segment comparing Canada's public health care to the privatized system in the United States, concluding that Canadians have more equitable access to medical services.
