The Evening Quickie

Breastfeeding mothers detained away from babies in the UK. It's all a part of someone's brilliant (and yes, I'm being sarcastic) idea to get rid of failed asylum seekers. I guess everything would be fine and dandy if these weren't infants who haven't even been weaned yet.

Researchers Developing Teardrop Test for Diabetics. Those who fear needles and pinpricks will still have to wait a few more years until the device is finished, but at least the process to check sugar levels won't be so difficult for them anymore.

Entertaining gay Israeli troops. Gay Jewish porn star Michael Lucas will visit Israel at the end of this month to entertain the troops, show support, and raise awareness of gay issues.

Intelligence officials doubt Iran uranium claims, say Cheney receiving suspect briefings. The Bush administration continues to bypass standard intelligence channels and use what some believe to be propaganda tactics to create a compelling case for war with Iran. No, really? In any case, this got leaked, so I bet someone will be out of a job soon...and possibly their life, too.

Prescott lets slip that some suspects won't face serious charges. John Prescott let slip yesterday that some of the 24 people arrested last week over the alleged transatlantic terror plot will not face serious charges. The Deputy Prime Minister made the admission during talks with Labour's Muslim MPs on how best to tackle Islamic extremism. During the 90-minute meeting, Mr Prescott briefed the MPs that the police only had enough evidence to bring serious charges against some suspects but not others.

Sporting Conservation Council/Finding balance. Apparently, Agriculture Undersecretary Mark Rey made some blurb about how environmentalists would like to see every tree named and hugged before being cut and then given a proper funeral. While I'm all for conservation and forest restoration -- you can never have enough trees -- even I can see the silliness in all of this. However, environmentalists are usually never this bad only PETA is.

Republicans push message: Dem wins could be victory for terrorists. Well, of course. They did this in 2004, and they'll do it again. Because terrorists just love "Demoncrats" and vice versa. Give me a break. When -- even if -- we get attacked again, it won't have anything to do with what party is in control of the government. Really, as if there haven't been "terrorist" attacks on America in its short history here on Earth (remember the War of 1812, people?).

Environmentalists withold support from Lieberman. A representative from the League of Conservation Voters explained that it hasn't decided to fund Lieberman's campaign for re-election so far because "Generally speaking, we only spend money on races where we're concerned about the outcome," and that "I don't think we know what the dynamics of that race are at this point in time."
