Zogby: Bush Job Approval-34%
Rating down despite foiled terror plot and Lebanon cease fire; Democrats hold generic Congressional lead.
President Bush's job approval rating dipped two points in the last three weeks, despite the foiling of an airline terror plot and the adoption of a cease-fire deal between Israel and Hezbollah forces in Lebanon, a new Zogby International telephone poll shows.
The survey was conducted Aug. 11-15, 2006, included 1,018 respondents, and carries a margin of error of +/- 3.1 percentage points.
The numbers continue to reflect erosion in the President's political base -- just 62% of Republicans give him positive marks for his job performance, while 38% give him negative marks. Even among weekly WalMart shoppers -- a demographic group identified by Pollster John Zogby as a critical support group for Bush -- just 45% now give him positive job marks, though his numbers among those shoppers have improved 10 points since early June.
The statement being made is pretty clear here. People are getting tired of the staged press events and daily missteps. The voting block wants results, and lately, nothing of substance has come out of the Bush White House or the do-nothing Congress, for that matter.
Even a foiled terror plot and newfound (yet uneasy) peace in the Middle East between Israel and Hezbollah couldn't help Shrub's numbers.
To sum it up, Bush is in Lame Duck City, and I don't see a change in his status anytime soon. The only thing that might bring about some kind of change would be an attack of Iran.
For several reasons, I hope they don't pull the Iran card as the October surprise. Troops dying on TV, a recession, and $7.00 a gallon gas wouldn't fare too well for
Republicans at the poll this coming November.
I will have to wait -- with the classic George Bush "confused puppy" stupor...you know, the kind when he goes off the script, and he doesn't know what to say -- for the next shoe to drop to see what the huge October surprise has in store for us.
