X-men 3 And Da Vinci Code Movies Continue To Rise At The Box Office

The latest in the X-men series, "Xmen 3: The Last Stand" continues to set and beat several box office records.

X Men: The Last Stand", the final installment of a Marvel comics trilogy, grossed 107 million dollars in its first weekend in North America, becoming the fourth biggest debut of all time, according to estimates.

Box office tracker Exhibitor Relations Co. said "X Men" easily pushed "Da Vinci Code" into second place at the box office, only a week after the religious thriller took in 77 million dollars for its first weekend.

The Da Vinci Code movie also continues very strong international sales at the box office.

But Da Vinci Code's haul went up from Friday to Saturday's $12.4 million, earning an impressive $125 mil domestically in just 9 days out. Again, Sony's Da Vinci outshone 20th Century Fox's X-Men 3 internationally. Da Vinci fell just 40% overseas to a whopping $92 mil over its second weekend. In Japan, the film fell only 19%.*

I'm told all of Europe except the UK still belongs to Da Vinci where it remains No. 1 in Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Belgium, Austria, Holland and Switzerland. India finally received its legal certificate to release DVC and the film opened in first position in the market. In the U.S., Da Vinci earned a respectable $10.2 mil domestically on Friday, putting its total American take at $112.7 mil going into Saturday.

And then there is news of a possible fourth movie in the X-men series.

Patrick Stewart says he's not convinced that this month's X-Men: The Last Stand will be the final X-Men movie.

"When it comes to it you can never say it's the last because a lot of it is about economic drive," he told an anti-bullying charity event. "The first two films were among the most successful films ever, if the third would continue that theme, I would imagine there's a strong possibility that within a short while a fourth one might be in the planning."

Would Stewart sign on for X4? "Oh yes! This is a smashing world to inhabit every few years. I like my character very much, he's an admirable character. I love the people that I'm working with -- Halle Berry, Famke Janssen, it could be worse!"
