The Senate pretty much told President Bush, "Uh, you got it wrong--we are the deciders here, and you can put the dunce cap back on and go sit back in the corner on the stool."
They committed a rather unusual and unheard of act of defiance.
That act: passing an $109 billion emergency spending bill the president has threatened to veto.
The Senate ignored President Bush's veto threat yesterday and easily passed a $109 billion emergency spending bill for war and hurricane recovery costs that also brimmed with favors for farmers, the fishing industry, and the states of Hawaii and Rhode Island.
The two-week debate that preceded yesterday's 77 to 21 final vote was marked by an election-year surge in targeted spending on behalf of constituents and special interests, despite repeated warnings by fiscal conservatives about a swollen budget deficit.
If Bush vetoes this bill, he might as well be signing the papers to start his own impeachment proceeding, free and clear.
This is also huge "congressional race" issue, and a bumbling presidential response could put some longtime GOP members on the Hill in a very bad spot.
We will have to just wait and see how this budget battle plays itself out in the end.
