Only in the Bible Belt can a small town ordinance dictate where people can and cannot live.
One of those towns way behind the times is the town of Black Jack, Missouri, a town where they will do everything in their power to drive you out if you don't meet their local definition of a family.
When a town ordinance is set-up to not allow children out of wedlock, the town has went too far, and one would have to question the constitutionality of such an ordinance. Especially when you have bought and paid for a 250K home, and some hick says you can't live in it because your family doesn't meet the local flavor of religion's definition of a family.
Really, how bigoted have some small towns become in this country?
Everything about this story is anti-American and goes against the very principles this country was founded on: people finally getting a home of their own and finding that American dream.
A small American town is facing accusations of seeking to drive unmarried couples with children out of town on grounds they do not fit the local definition of a family.
The brewing controversy in Black Jack, a town of 6,800 in the central state of Missouri, began unfolding earlier this year when Olivia Shelltrack and Fondray Loving were denied an occupancy permit after moving into a four-bedroom house they had purchased.
The couple were then left with the option of getting married, packing their bags and leaving town, or putting up a fight, which is what they decided to do.
"I think the city wants to send a clear message that they don't want children born out of wedlock," Shelltrack told AFP in a phone interview. "It has become a moral issue for them.
The US Department of Housing and Urban Development is conducting an investigation, and I hope they come down hard on this town. The ACLU is getting ready to file a lawsuit on the couples' behalf, and I honestly hope the couple wins.
This is far too reaching and goes beyond basic freedoms afforded to every American.
What's really sad is the fact that this discriminatory process has been going on for several years according to ACLU records.
Anthony Rothert, the legal director for the ACLU in eastern Missouri, told AFP that some 10 unmarried couples with children had been denied occupancy permits in recent years in Black Jack and were essentially driven out of town.
"If Olivia and Fondray were married and had 20 kids they could live in the house," he said. "I think this is all about the city trying to impose its moral values on its citizens."
Welcome to Bush-loving, fundie Bible Belt of America, folks; the very behind-the-times, Green-Acres part of the country.
