The Indonesian government and the World Health Organization are facing a grave shortage of orthopedic supplies. They are reaching out to the international community to get more needed supplies such as food rations, orthopedic pins and plates.
May 31 (Bloomberg) -- Indonesia's government and the World Health Organization asked overseas donors to send orthopedic equipment to treat more than 10,000 patients injured in the May 27 earthquake in Java that killed 5,846 people.
The government is trying to mobilize nurses trained to handle emergencies to treat a rising number of patients, said Vijai Nath, a medical officer with the WHO in Yogyakarta. Hospitals in districts affected by the quake need supplies such as orthopedic pins and plates.
"It's a little bit worrying because there is a queue of people waiting for supplies," Nath said in an interview from the disaster area yesterday. "In Indonesia, with all these emergencies going around, there might not be sufficient" supplies so health authorities want international help.
The Indonesian government and aid agencies are struggling to treat survivors and avoid the spread of disease in the quake-hit area. Health authorities are trying to avoid a repeat of the outbreak of tetanus, a preventable bacterial disease affecting the body's muscles and nerves, that resulted in deaths after the tsunami disaster in Aceh in 2004.
