You think the response for those in need was bad during Hurricane Katrina...the Government Accountability Office says unless major changes are made, and the Pentagon takes a more aggressive role in a federal response, the government again will not be ready for another major disaster.
Score more points for the "throw money at the problem" theory which both the current Congress and the Bush Administration are in love with.
It's worked so good this far, hasn't it? [sarcasm]
The government won't be ready for another major disaster such as Hurricane Katrina unless the Pentagon takes a more aggressive role in the federal response, congressional investigators said Monday.
Poor planning and confusion about the military's role contributed to problems after the storm struck on Aug. 29, 2005, and without immediate attention improvement is unlikely, the Government Accountability Office said.
It urged the Defense Department to establish procedures to speed aircraft, troops and reconnaissance gear to hurricane-stricken areas when local and state officials are overwhelmed as well as beef up communications support to Homeland Security officials, who have the lead role in a disaster.
I really feel sorry for anyone who lives in the zones most likely to be hit by hurricanes again this year. One can almost guarantee the response will probably be a another huge disappointment.
After all, what are we paying taxes for--to actually help citizens during a crisis or time of need?
Obviously, the GOP controlling the purse strings in Congress right now doesn't think so.
