Republican senator Richard Lugar has urged the Bush Administration to change its Iran plans; focusing on direct negotiations (OMFG diplomacy??) instead of plans based around economic sanctions and a thirst for war.
Good luck, Senator Lugar. Things like reason and the obvious don't resonate well with this administration.
INFLUENTIAL Republican senator Richard Lugar has urged the Bush administration to change its Iran strategy, saying the US must talk directly to Tehran about its nuclear ambitions instead of pushing for economic sanctions.
Senator Lugar said Iran, as the world's fourth-largest supplier of oil, was "part of the energy picture" and urged President George W. Bush to play "cool" and seek direct negotiations.
He said it was too soon to be pressing the international community for economic sanctions against Iran, a strategy being strongly urged by the US ambassador at the UN, John Bolton, and, more recently, by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
The surprise comments from the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee came ahead of this week's crucial talks in Moscow, where the US, Britain, France, China, Russia and Germany will discuss Iran's increasing nuclear belligerence and the anti-Israeli rhetoric of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The US will use the summit to ask for visa restrictions, trade sanctions and a freeze on Iran's assets abroad.
Besides, there is no money to be made on peace with Iran. This administration always sides with the almighty dollar
Too bad there aren't more great minds in politics like Senator Lugar. He realizes attacking Iran will open up a Pandora's box we don't need or want.
