You knew it was coming.
Tens of thousands of Latinos took to the streets of Phoenix yesterday to protest enforcement-heavy immigration legislation to be considered in the U.S. Senate next week. Police said the protest was Phoenix's largest ever.
A similar march in Tucson drew 400 to 800 people.
In Phoenix, protesters marched up and down 24th Street, snarling traffic and angering some business owners.
The show of might surprised organizers as largely immigrant construction workers, students and community activists took the day off and jammed the street, marching north from St. Agnes Catholic Church near McDowell Road to Camelback Road and the office of U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, R-Ariz.
Phoenix police estimated the crowd to be upward of 20,000.
During the loud but peaceful mid-morning rallies demonstrators vented frustration over the controversial U.S. House Bill 4437, sponsored by Wisconsin Republican Rep. James Sensenbrenner. The controversial bill would, in part, make it a felony to be illegally in the country.
The people are speaking, Washington. Will you listen?
